Day 257 Update: 23 Civilians Killed by Israeli Airstrikes on Wednesday

On Wednesday, day 257 of the Israeli assault on the entire population of 2.3 million Palestinians living in the world’s largest open-air prison: the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces continued bombing and attacking Palestinian civilians by land, sea and air.

At least 11 Palestinian civilians were killed and others were injured on Wednesday evening in a raid launched by the Israeli occupation aircraft east of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip.

A correspondent with the Wafa news agency reported that 11 Palestinians were killed and 30 others were injured, in a raid launched by the Israeli occupation aircraft on a gathering of civilians on Salah al-Din Street, east of Rafah. The bodies of the killed and the wounded were transported to the European Gaza Hospital in the neighboring city of Khan Younis.

Earlier, two civilians were killed in Israeli occupation artillery shelling around Al-Alam Roundabout, west of the city of Rafah, bringing the number of people killed in the city since dawn today to 23 martyrs.

Local sources reported that the Israeli occupation army destroyed more than 70% of the city’s facilities and infrastructure, including burning and destroying the Rafah border crossing to Egypt.

The Israeli occupation forces continue to close the crossing after they occupied the Palestinian side of it on May 7, the day after the start of their ground invasion of the city of Rafah.

In Gaza City on Wednesday, two Palestinians were killed after being targeted by a missile from an Israeli drone.

A medical source at Al-Ahly Al-Arabi Hospital “Al-Maamdani” reported that two deceased men arrived at the hospital after they were targeted by a missile from an Israeli drone on Al-Sikka Street in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza City.

Also Wednesday evening, near the eastern entrance to the city of Jericho, near the Jordan River, eyewitnesses reported to “Wafa” news agency that a group of Israeli paramilitary colonizers gathered in the vicinity of the Karama border crossing linking Jordan to the West Bank, as humanitarian aid trucks were scheduled to arrive from Jordan heading to Gaza.

An activist in the Popular Resistance Committees in the Jordan Valley, Ayman Gharib, indicated to “Wafa” that the Israeli colonists are gathering in an attempt to obstruct the passage of trucks, attack their drivers, and sabotage their contents, pointing out that they have carried out similar attacks in the recent period, under the protection of the Israeli occupation forces.

These ongoing attacks on humanitarian aid by right-wing Israeli colonizers come as Democracy Now reports that aid agencies are running out of food in southern Gaza amid Israel’s ongoing offensive in Rafah and the shutdown of the two main border crossings in the south. Some 1.1 million Palestinians are on the brink of starvation, according to the United Nations, while a “full-blown famine” is taking place in the north.

Israeli peace activist Sapir Sluzker Amran said, about one of the recent incidents of attacks on aid trucks that she witnessed: “Settlers and their supporters, they are organizing in those WhatsApp groups, getting notifications from inside information, actually, to know where the trucks are going and coming from, and then trying to block them or to loot and destroy the entire food on the trucks…And what the settlers did is tearing up the entire food that was there. There were bags of rice, bags of sugar and instant noodles in bags. And they did it in a way that we cannot repair it. They did it in a way that they were tearing everything down, jumping on the instant noodles so we cannot save it. And, yeah, that was the situation.”

In an ongoing and indefinite, ever-increasing toll, the number of people killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli occupation aggression on the 7th of last October reached 37,396 killed, in addition to 85,523 wounded, the majority of whom are children and women. A number of victims are still under the rubble and on the roads, and crews cannot access their bodies. An estimated 1100 Israelis were killed on October 7th, including 800 civilians – many of whom were killed by so-called ‘friendly fire’ when Israeli forces dropped bombs and fired artillery shells into buildings and at cars fleeing the ‘Nova’ rave.
