Palestinian media institutions have demanded the Palestinian Authority (PA) to stop its security apparatuses’ violations against Palestinian journalists and to release those detained immediately.
This came during a meeting held on Saturday in the Gaza Strip by representatives from the Democratic Journalist Assembly Bloc, Forum of Palestinian Journalists, the Palestinian Media Assembly, and the Palestinian Journalist Bloc.
The participants discussed the arbitrary detention of eight journalists by PA security apparatuses in the West Bank and agreed on making serious efforts to put an end to the persecution of journalists there.
They also denounced the PA security agencies for arresting the journalists and summoning others for interrogation, calling for their immediate release.
The PA security authorities in the West Bank arrested eight Palestinian journalists over the past few days and leveled charges against them based on the electronic crimes law, which was endorsed recently by the PA chief Mahmoud Abbas with no regard for the freedom of the press.
