Bedouin lawyer killed in Negev-area village

Adam al-Hawashla

NEGEV (Ma’an) — A Palestinian citizen of Israel was shot dead in the Negev region of southern Israel on Monday evening, according to Israeli police and local sources.

Police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said in statement that Adam al-Hawashla, a 42-year-old from the Bedouin village of Hura, was shot in Molda, another Negev-area Bedouin community.
Locals said that Hawashla, a lawyer, was targeted by unidentified assailants as he was leaving the mosque following Ramadan prayers.
Al-Hawashla was pronounced dead shortly upon arrival at the Soroka hospital in Beersheba, al-Samri added.
Palestinian-majority areas in Israel have seen an increase in gun violence in recent years, while members of the Arab Joint List, a coalition of political parties representing Palestinian citizens of Israel, have called on authorities to crack down on illegal weapons in Israel’s Palestinian communities, where there is a disproportionate lack of policing compared to Jewish-majority neighborhoods.
A Knesset report on Bedouins residing in Israel warned of “high rates of unemployment, poverty, and crime” in Bedouin communities in the Negev, where more than half of the 160,000-strong Bedouin population resides in unrecognized villages with little to no access to infrastructure, health, and education, according to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI).
