JENIN (Ma’an) – Unidentified gunmen shot and injured a young Palestinian man in Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank on Saturday night, according to Palestinian police.A police spokesperson said that Nidal Abu Khurj was shot in the leg in the al-Jabriyat neighborhood of the camp, and was taken to the public hospital in Jenin city for treatment. The statement added that Jenin district police opened a probe into the case.
According to UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, Jenin refugee camp “has been the scene of significant suffering” over the years, where one of the highest rates of unemployment and poverty are recorded among the 19 refugee camps in the occupied West Bank.
Both Israeli and Palestinian security forces conduct regular operations in the camp that often result in clashes and violence, which has “also had a significant impact on the emotional and psychosocial well-being of young children especially,” according to UNRWA.
