Israel to demolish ‘thousands’ of homes in Jerusalem
The demolition to take place should illegal Jewish outpost in West Bank evacuated
Barkat said he asked for the demolition orders following the High Court of Justice’s ruling this week to evacuate and destroy the structures in Amona, which were built on a private Palestinian land
Jewish Mayor of Jerusalem threatened on Wednesday to demolish “thousands” of Palestinian homes if illegal Jewish outpost of Amona is evacuated.
“Unless Amona is legalised, we will have to destroy hundreds or thousands of houses in Jerusalem too,” Israeli Jewish Mayor of occupied Jerusalem Nir Barkat said. “The Amona verdict leaves us no discretion to legalise building offenses.”
Barkat said he asked for the demolition orders following the High Court of Justice’s ruling this week to evacuate and destroy the structures in Amona, which were built on a private Palestinian land.
He claimed that hundreds of Palestinian families live on Jewish land against whom indictments have been served in recent years. In several cases demolition orders were issued by a court.
Sami Ershied, a lawyer working with housing issues in East Jerusalem, said: “As much as the city hall believes in justice, it should ensure that homes of Palestinians taken by Jews are returned to their owners.”
Ir Amim, an Israeli left-wing organisation active in Jerusalem, harshly criticised Barkat, saying: “He has revealed his true face, embracing the ‘price tag’ tactics,” a reference to attacks by Jewish extremists on Palestinians and others.
