Head of the Syrian Coalition’s legal committee Haitham al-Maleh called for “transferring” the Syrian file from the UN Security Council to the UN General Assembly to hold accountable perpetrators of war crimes against the Syrian people.

Maleh said that he submitted a proposal to the Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit during a meeting at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo on Monday to press for action by the UN General Assembly under the “Uniting for Peace” resolution.

Maleh pointed out that the referral of the situation in Syria to the UN General Assembly is equal to the Chapter VII of the UN Charter. He added that he has submitted documents to the Arab League chief about the crimes and violations have committed by the Assad regime forces and the foreign sectarian militias fighting on their side over the past six months. These documents were also submitted to the UN.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) on Tuesday said that the Assad regime and Russian forces bombed 144 vital civilian facilities in Syria during October. The targeted facilities included 46 infrastructure facilities, 34 educational facilities, 21 houses of worship, 29 medical facilities, 9 residential blocks, 1 cultural center, and 4 IDP camps.

Maleh noted that he discussed with Aboul Gheit the situation in Syria and the region, adding that he stressed the need to refer perpetrators of war crimes in Syria to the International Criminal Court. He urged the Arab League to shoulder its responsibilities towards the countries of the region.
