Plans for early elections to Israel’s Knesset have been cancelled after the Prime Minister announced that his Likud Party had formed a coalition with its main opposition party.
It was revealed early on Tuesday morning that Likud would bring the Kadima Party into government.
The centrist party is now led by former Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz, who recently defeated Tzipi Livni to take charge of Kadima.
In 2009 Ms Livni refused to go into government with Benjamin Netanyahu because of differences in their approaches to the peace process.
Kadima’s presence in the coalition will give the government 94 of the Knesset’s 120 seats.
Mr Netanyahu said: “Unity restores stability.
“A broad national unity government is good for security, good for the economy and good for the people of Israel.”
The move was criticised by Israel’s left-wing Labour Party, who labelled it “ridiculous”.

Indeed Mr Netanyahu, unity does restore stability. And yes Mr Netanyahu, “A broad national government is good for security, good for the economy and good for the people of Israel”.
Why then, in Gods’ name, are you denying the same privileges to the Palestinians? Why are you fighting the reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Fatah tooth and Nail? Why are you telling the world, America, that a national unity government for the Palestinians poses an existential threat to Israel?
I’ll tell why, shall I? Because a Zionist war criminal like you will never countenance a free, strong and viable Palestinian state in any part of Palestine. Your policies and those of many Zionist, racists like yourself have always been about the total theft and domination of the entire landmass of historical Palestine.
I have news for you, Mr. Netanyahu, we will do everything at our disposal to thwart your inhumane and callous policies. We are not going anywhere, no matter what the sacrifices and the hardships are. We are here to stay. Furthermore, Mr. Netanyahu, the world at large and especially your audience in America are waking up to the fact that they have been sold falsehood propaganda and emotional blackmail for long enough. They are more informed, they are more open to the other point of view and they are wise to your absurdities.
